Randy Sawatzky

Meet Randy Sawatzky, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who now resides in Calgary, Alberta. From a young age, Randy developed a deep affection for music. His childhood memories are filled with the excitement of attending live shows at the “Charleswood in Motion Days”, a local fair featuring a stage ingeniously built into the side of a semi-trailer. The fiddlers and country bands performing on that stage left a lasting impression on him, sparking a desire to learn the guitar or fiddle. In time, he was gifted a guitar. However, without instructions, lessons, or even a tuner, the guitar soon found its way to the back of the closet - a tale all too familiar to many. Despite this, Randy’s love for music remained undiminished, and at the age of 39, he finally started taking fiddle lessons, a testament to his enduring passion.

Instruments

The 1981

In 2023, I had the pleasure of acquiring this exquisite fiddle from my dear friend, the remarkable Donna Turk. Its sweet, resonant sound and intricate scroll design make it a true masterpiece. The craftsmanship is nothing short of beautiful, and its rich history includes being played by one of Canada’s most celebrated musician.

The 1981

Giovani Gammuto

In 2012, I purchased a 2007 Giovani Gammuto fiddle from Philadelphia. I’ve added octave strings to achieve those rich, viola-like low notes.
